Account for Other Restrictions

By this point in the plant selection funnel, you will have a much shorter list of potential plants for your gardening project.  However, we recommend taking the time to ask yourself if there are any other factors you should take into account before finalizing your list.  A few examples of potentially relevant questions include:

  • Do you have a dog that likes to snack on flora?  If so, be sure to check whether or not the plant is toxic to animals.  The ASPCA maintains a list of plants that are toxic and non-toxic to dogs.

  • Are deer prevalent in your area? Nothing is more frustrating than to find your garden razed to the ground by hungry critters.  Choosing deer resistant species can save you time, money and heart-ache.

  • Do nurseries in my area stock the plants? Some native plants are more readily available commercially than others. See our Finding Native Plants page for more information on local nurseries.
Some dogs are inclined to satisfy their curiosity by sampling the new greens in the garden. If that is the case with your pet, be sure to screen plants for toxicity.
